These are some of the many types of comradeship that Remarque puts into this novel. Paul progresses throughout the novel from a fighting machine to a human being. Paul finally realizes that all men can be friends when they have something in common. He also realizes that in the end all men are created equal and similar. Thus fighting is devastating to everyone and only the comfort of comradeship can get someone through it.
