Women’s true stories, as many feminists point out, often have to be reassembled from fragments to form a new pattern that one can tell. In Beloved, Morrison gives this phenomenon a name -- “re-memory” -- and shows how events constructed this way become truer rather than more false, as the metaphorical footprints can fit anybody who puts their feet into them.
