Eventually some top Republicans were convinced of the need to place the US in a position of going to war over an attack on Western Europe. Finally, the US Senate agreed to make the US a member of NATO. This also meant stationing permanent US troops in Europe as a tripwire to ensure US intervention in a war in Europe.
