The romantic dream of the unification of Italy was fulfilled and Garibaldi was ecstatic, but of Mazzini, his utopia had been spoiled by the introduction of the practical without the political. Italy had changed little for the average person, and although united under one government, there were limited changes with the new constitutional monarchy, for Mazzini, Garibaldi’s victory was a hollow one, as the people still had no democratic voice.
