“A Clean Well-Lighted Place” by Ernest Hemingway captures the emotions of alienation and loneliness. Hemingway uses his three characters to show different aspects of these emotions. Not knowing how other people feel, the same way the younger waiter did not understand the older waiter or the deaf man, shows the lack of knowledge younger people have on older people. These older people are the ones who have lived their lives and know what lies ahead for the younger people. Hemingway does an excellent job of showing these feelings through his story.
