First Person account of Hariot Tubman.
I was born into slavery in 1819 or 1820, in Dorchester County,
Maryland. Given the names of my two parents, both held in slavery, I was
of purely African ancestry. I was whipped even as a small child and
received a serious headwound when I refused to help tie up a run-a-way
slave. At the age of 25, I married John Tubman, a free African American.

understand that "times were very critical and therefore no foolishness
would be indulged in on the road." That several who were rather weak-
kneed and faint-hearted were greatly invigorated by my blunt and positive
manner and threat of extreme measures, there could be no doubt. I spent
her last years in the home telling stories of my life to visitors. On March
10, 1913, I died of pneumonia. I was 93 years old.
