To the 12 million immigrants who came to America from 1890-1910 the Gilded Age brought lavish dreams of vast wealth and great luck. Hardly any American could claim more than 4 generations without an immigrant ancestor and yet they refused to accept those who came to gain fortune like them. The Gilded Age was a façade, a ploy for corporations to benefit from cheap labor. The immigrants built this nation and yet their reward was cut wages and hostility, a life little better than what they hoped to escape from their homelands.
