He started another fast, at the age of 78. His purpose was to end the bloodshed. Five days later, the leaders agreed to stop fighting and Gandhi broke his fast.
A few days later, on his way to a prayer meeting in New Delhi, Gandhi was assassinated. His death was mourned by the entire world.
