Shakespeare is… showing his own attitudes towards [Isabella]’s choice” (Schanzer 111), but he also showed that quality even more vividly and with less controversy in a male character, Angelo. But even though Angelo’s hypocrisy is much more vivid and obvious than Isabella’s, it doesn’t strike as big a reaction from me. Maybe it is the subtlety and vagueness of Isabella’s hypocrisy and self-righteousness that makes it all the more dangerous.
