Three Farmers: Photograph and Novel
August Sander, a German photographer from the early twentieth century, changed the way people view society through photography. This is illustrated in and by the Richard Powers novel “Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance.” Powers uses a Sander photograph by the same name as the novel as a main focal point in his story development.

The photograph Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance also influenced Richard Powers. He would never have written the novel by the same name if not for the photo. He did a wonderful job of exemplifying Sander’s work and goal thereof. By telling the different ‘stories’ within the novel, Powers shows how the work of Sander is meant to influence the future through the past.
