Olaudah Equiano’s initial paragraph from his autobiography clearly states the intentions of the ensuing narrative and is perhaps the most important paragraph in the book. These travels also established a commonality with English men, who experienced the same trials, which allowed them to relate and therefore understand his plights as a man and not merely a slave. His revelations touched on all subjects of slavery to open the eyes of some who knew not of the depravity and brutality of slavery while also revolutionizing the thoughts of many who thought of slavery as necessary and humane.
