5) I believe that the author had the rapist at the start and end of the movie to show that no all crime is completely wrong. The rapist commits crime for self-pleaser, when Carl commits it for the benefiting others, like Frank and his mother. In the Movie Carl takes up a sort of protective role, and commits these crimes in order to protect the good in humanity.
