An interesting thing that Solomon did before he asked for wisdom is that he acknowledged God, what he did for his father David and how he left a son to rule in his thrown, and finally he is given an explanation for what he is asking for. This shows the Humbleness of Solomon (1 Kgs 3:6-8). He is not instantly taking advantage of God's blessing, but understanding God's goodness.
