The Metal-Arene Complex
Introduction
The point and purpose of this experiment is to explore the different modes of stretching that are allowed by a metal with a three-carbonyl ligand system. The ligand that we are going to study is an arene, which allows for it to have different properties as opposed to the normal metal ligand groups. With the ligand that we are going to create, we will study the stretching modes by IR and observe that there

angle, plug in the intensities in to Equ. 1 and solve for Theta.
1946.59 / 1879.38 = tan (theta/2)2 …..Solving for theta……theta = 91.00655 deg.
Thus meaning the two carboxyl ligands are very close to being cis to one another
There are only two bands on the IR spectrum because there are two asymmetric stretching modes, which probably accounts for the high absorbance measurement of that peak. That also means that those two asymmetric stretching modes have identical absorbance frequencies.
