The Great Depression was one of the most terrible catastrophes in U.S. history, and resulted in the need for government help to pull the nation out of the depression. The NIRA did not do enough to help improve industrial conditions. Conditions in the slums were terrible, and unemployment and poverty were abundant. The Depression was not lifted until the U.S. entered WWII, and because the New Deal failed in doing so, it was not a success.
