In the general prologue Chaucer tells us that she is "Pleasant and friendly in her ways, and straining to counterfeit grace..." which tells the reader that this is not how she acts all the time but the story she tells reveals that this how she feels most of the time in her heart and that she really is a good person that is just ignorant of her place in the world.
