I think the end of the story indicates that the old postman is looking back at his long life, having a review, wondering if he did the right choices for himself. How has his life been? What was it really like when he was young? What has he achieved?
To look at it from another angle; “I wonder”. Has this event really happened, or is the postman imagining this whole situation ? Well, I wonder.
