She brought me close to her once again and hugged me. My coat was still only
part way off when she straightened up. She gripped my shoulders to hold me off. In a
husky sort of voice she said, “I’ll be right back.”

good friends. He took Jennings, Walter and their mother, to see different places, like the
beach, and into the country. When Jennings was sad, upset, or confused, he could talk to
Sal. In the end, Sal stayed with Gene and Jennings so they wouldn’t have to go to any
more homes. Sal was like a father to Jennings.
