Galicia. Poland had been a powerful nation in the 1400s and 1500s but during the 16-1700’s Polish nobles became more and more independent and the king slowly lost power. The nobles met in the Diet to pass laws, but each noblemen had to approve of a law and any noblemen could veto a law, creating an atmosphere of not much going on. Poland was divided further in 1795 and was no longer an independent state until 1919.
