So in the end, the South’s efforts to secure their rights to slavery only resulted in its abolishment. Even small victories for the South such as the Dred Scott decision and the Fugitive Slave Law hurt them in the long run by angering Northerners, making them realize that the nation needed to be preserved and could not exist half slave and half free.
