Beowulf begins with King Hrothgar of Denmark in his hall, Heorot. Heorot is being attacked by a monster called Grendel. Grendel kills many of the Danes who try to fight and kill him. A great Geat, Beowulf, hears of the great distress Grendel is causing the Danes and King Hrothgar, and gathers some of the best warriors to go to Denmark to defeat the monster.
