Suffering --- however horrifying, awful, hideous, and disturbing it may be --- causes a person to become more sincere, strong-minded, and perceptive. It causes a person to become isolated from society until they accept it and allow it ennoble them. It forces a person to recognize the wrong of their crime and accept their punishment.
